Sir John Davis reported in despatch 160 of 22nd May, that Mr. Hardwick's plan was the one he had stated in Despatch 21, to be too difficult of execution; and that he had directed Mr Cleverly to prepare a Plan (to cost £8,300).
We The site may perhaps be levelled, but Governor does not feel justified in commencing the building, under the qualified sanction conveyed in Mr Gladstone's Despatch 28 of 20th February. Community have subscribed £2,726, of which sum however, only £1,379 has been paid. Governor would be glad to be authorized to commence the building of the Church, on the Chaplain guaranteeing to realise £3,000, if required.
Earl Grey replied in despatch 134 of 8th October and authorized the commencement of the Church as designed by Mr Cleverly (sum not exceeding £8,300), one third of the whole amount to be contributed from the Colonial Treasury, on the express understanding that the remaining two thirds at the least be subscribed by the private Community.
Sir John Davis in Despatch 131 of 18th November forwarded another Plan by Mr Gordon for £6,959. 0.3 and stated that in consequence of Your Exc's conditional assent to the commencement of a less expensive Church, he should not hesitate to adopt the plan now transmitted, two thirds of the expense (£4,639. 12. 2), being contributed by Government.
Lord Grey conveyed his entire approval of this measure in dispatch 62 of 2nd February, 1847.
